SECRETARY OF STATE ROSS MILLER ISSUES OFFICIAL INTERPRETATION TO
CLARIFY QUESTIONS REGARDING VERIFICATION OF PETITION SIGNATURES

Carson City , NV –Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller today issued an official Secretary of State Interpretation regarding verification of signatures for certain petitions in Nevada.  The Secretary of State Interpretation (Number 08-23-01) concludes that “…it is the duty of the county clerk to verify that:  (1.) The signatories for a recall petition actually voted in the election in which the officer subject to the petition was elected.  (2.) The address included with the signature on a petition matches the address in the file of applications to register to vote.”

The Interpretation was issued as a response to questions arising during the circulation of petitions.  Secretary Miller believes it is his responsibility, as chief elections officer for the State of Nevada, to keep all parties informed of his interpretation of relevant law and regulation.

A copy of Secretary of State Interpretation Number 08-23-01 is posted on the Nevada Secretary of State website at www.nvsos.gov.
